Ha! You’re welcome?
Managing adventures is a tough task as a weekend warrior (which these days I am too) but, honestly, just make a plan, make the time and make it happen.
1.)Use your vacation days wisely. I prefer to spread my vacation days out across multiple 3 to 5 day weekend trips throughout the year rather than blow it all on a few weeks somewhere once a year.
2.)Travel regionally - as a fellow Utahn, you should know we live in one of the most beautifully diverse areas in the world - I shit you not. There are nearly 10 National Parks within an 8 hour drive from Salt Lake City, UT.
3.)8 hours is NOT a long drive. Think of it this way: next time it is 4 in the afternoon on a Friday and you are sneaking out of work early for the weekend to have dinner and catch a movie - well, about the time you are getting home that night to go to bed just think how you could be setting up camp or snuggled into your sleeping bag in Yellowstone, Grand Teton, Rocky Mountain, Arches, Canyonland, or Bryce Canyon National Park. Or, think of it like this: if you wake up at 6am on a Saturday you can be in Arizona, California, Nevada, Idaho, Wyoming, Colorado or Montana for lunch. This was the real eye opener for me in college - thinking of the amazing places I could be in the same day just by going.
4.) Just go. Leaving Friday evening, I once drove from Bellingham, WA to Utah to climb in the desert for the weekend and was back in time for class on Monday morning. I’ve driven from Salt Lake City to Bishop, CA to climb a specific route in a day, relaxed alone in a beautiful hot spring and driven back to in 24 hours. Just go.
